A project for my year 1 university course "Ideas". For this course, our class was split into teams to analysis the different harbourfronts of Hong Kong. My team was assigned the Central to Causeway Bay Harbourfront. We first conducted site analysis to identify the issues at hand, and to gain a better understanding of our site overall.
Through a site visit, we compiled some of the major issues that were first identified, and then chose our topics continuing from the site visit. I had decided to focus on the issue of lack of services for pet owners in the Harbourfront.
We collected the site history as to understand why the design lacked some services, based on the time and background history of when the area was constructed. This helped us in determining how we can build onto the current site instead of demolishing and starting over.
Pet Service Station
Central harbour front has several different services stations, however so each station only has one purpose, either to provide water or a defecation pad. Each of these stations are placed far from each other, making it hard for the pet owners to be able to reach each station.
Scenario:
Pet defecates, requiring pet owner to pick up the defecation and rinse it away, however the water station is 10 meters infront of them, and the defecation bin is 10 meteres behind them.
The pet service station I designed fixes all of these issues by combining each station into a general pet service station, complete with a water bottle refill, a pet drinking station, a defecation pad, a bin, and a washing basin.
Segregation Fence
Some enjoyers of the harbour front may be afraid of pets and would have issues with walking next to dogs, however, I created a segregation fence that seperates most of the trail so that pet owners and those without pets can enjoy the harbour together.
Pet Friendly Area
Dogs need space to blow steam off to run around and socialize, however, the only pet friendly area that allows for off leash behavior is not close to the harbour, and has no view of the harbour. However, the government had built several decks next to the harbour to enjoy the views. One of these decks, as proposed below can be turned into an off leash area for dogs, so that even pet owners can enjoy the scenery while taking their dog for a walk.
